Shubh muhurat: common questions
How are these muhurat dates calculated?
They are worked out for your location from the positions of the Sun and the Moon: tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana, weekday and lunar month, plus whether Jupiter (Guru) and Venus (Shukra) are visible. Nothing is copied from a table of dates. We compare the results with Drik Panchang, and each page lists the rules it uses.
Which months are avoided for marriage?
Chaturmas (from Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi to Kartika Shukla Ekadashi), Adhika masa, and the days when the Sun is in Karka, Simha, Kanya, Dhanu or Meena, which includes Kharmas.
What is Guru and Shukra asta?
Jupiter and Venus are called set (asta) when they cannot be seen near the Sun. Marriage and griha pravesh are not started then, and the 3 days before they set and after they rise again are avoided too.
Why does a time say "Next Day"?
A panchang day runs from sunrise to the next sunrise. A time after midnight still belongs to the day that began at the previous sunrise, so it is marked Next Day.
Are the dates the same in every city?
Not always. Sunrise and the Moon's position at a given time depend on the place, so the windows move by minutes and sometimes a day gains or loses its muhurat. Choose your city on each page.
Which ceremonies can I calculate now?
Vivah (marriage), Griha Pravesh (house warming), property purchase and vehicle purchase. The other ceremonies in the list are being prepared.
