About Gulikai Kalam

Gulikai Kalam, also called Gulika Kaal or Kuligai, is the part of the day ruled by Gulika (Mandi), described in Jyotisha as a son of Shani. It comes once every day, in a part of the daylight fixed by the weekday.

  • Daytime
  • One of the 8 parts of the day
  • About 1½ hours
  • Avoided for new beginnings

The daylight, from sunrise to sunset, is cut into eight equal parts. Gulika rules the seventh part on Sunday and one part earlier on each day after it, down to the first part on Saturday. The length of the day changes with the season and the place, and so do the times.

What is avoided

It is believed that whatever is done in Gulikai Kalam tends to repeat. It is therefore avoided for taking a loan, for funeral rites and for anything one would not want repeated, while some South Indian families count it a good time to repay a debt or buy gold.

This is traditional calendar guidance, not a guarantee of any outcome. Panchang traditions differ on these periods; for a particular ceremony, ask your family priest or follow your own panchang.

Times are worked out for the place you have chosen (India until you choose one). For the whole day at your place, open the daily panchang.
