About Varjyam

Varjyam (Varjya, also called Tyajya or Visha Ghati) is a span within each nakshatra that is set aside as unfavourable. It is followed especially in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu, and is usually listed next to Amrit Kalam, which is worked out the same way.

  • Any time of the day or night
  • Set by the nakshatra
  • About 1½ hours
  • Avoided for auspicious work

Each nakshatra has a fixed point, counted in ghatis from its start, where Varjyam begins. It lasts 4 of the nakshatra's 60 ghatis, about 1½ hours, longer or shorter with the time the Moon takes to cross that nakshatra. As it follows the Moon and not the Sun, it can fall at any hour, and some days have none.

What is avoided

Weddings, upanayana, griha pravesh and other auspicious beginnings are not fixed in Varjyam. It does not affect daily worship.

This is traditional calendar guidance, not a guarantee of any outcome. Panchang traditions differ on these periods; for a particular ceremony, ask your family priest or follow your own panchang.

Times are worked out for the place you have chosen (India until you choose one). For the whole day at your place, open the daily panchang.
