About Panchak

Panchak (Panchaka) is the time the Moon passes through the last five nakshatras: the second half of Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati. This is the Moon's passage through Kumbha (Aquarius) and Meena (Pisces), so it comes about once every 27 days.

  • While the Moon is in Kumbha and Meena
  • Dhanishta (second half) to Revati
  • About 4½ days
  • Avoided for some work

The Moon takes about four and a half days to cross these nakshatras. Panchak begins when the Moon enters Kumbha and ends when it leaves Meena, at any hour.

What is avoided

During Panchak, gathering wood and grass, laying a roof, making a bed, travelling south and cremation without the prescribed rites are traditionally avoided. Other auspicious work is not ruled out by Panchak alone. A Panchak is also named by the weekday it begins on, such as Raja, Chora or Mrityu Panchak.

This is traditional calendar guidance, not a guarantee of any outcome. Panchang traditions differ on these periods; for a particular ceremony, ask your family priest or follow your own panchang.

Times are worked out for the place you have chosen (India until you choose one). For the whole day at your place, open the daily panchang.
